The concert hall,
on your head.
TSL is a new class of audiophile headphone that reconstructs the soundstage in front of the listener, the way a properly placed pair of speakers does in a treated room. Anytime, anywhere.
Explore the technology
The first headphones where music finally sounds like itself.
Today's headphone drivers can match, and often beat, loudspeakers on sound pressure, frequency range, phase linearity and impulse response. But the classic one-driver-per-ear layout keeps the left and right channels fully separated.
On a normal stereo recording, that design pulls the soundstage inside your head instead of placing it in front of you, the way a well set-up pair of speakers does in a treated room. TSL fixes this acoustically, so you get a real stage on any track, anywhere.
Each ear cup carries two drivers instead of one. A primary driver plays its own channel (left on the left side, right on the right) and a second driver plays a corrected version of the opposite channel. The two signals are summed inside a waveguide combiner with the right delays, so each ear hears both channels the way it would from a real pair of speakers.
Waveguide combiner
A 3D-printed acoustic chamber that mixes the two drivers in each cup with the correct path lengths to your ear.
Correction circuit
A passive amplitude and phase network splits the left and right input signal between the primary and secondary drivers so the recombined wavefront stays clean.
Open or closed back
The same design works with sealed covers for closed-back models or breathable mesh covers for open-back models, depending on the drivers used.
Proven in the listening room.
To prove the idea works, we built a full prototype from off-the-shelf parts: a standard headband, ear pads and budget-grade 40 mm drivers. The waveguide combiner was 3D printed in photopolymer, and the correction circuits were made adjustable so we could tune them by ear.
We tested it on a stationary hi-fi setup (Quad Artera Solus and Rega Io amplifiers, Primare SC-15 source and DAC) as well as from regular desktop and laptop sound cards. In every session the DDTS prototype clearly beat traditional headphones.
- A real soundstage built in front of the listener
- Sharper separation and placement of individual instruments
- More emotional engagement and less fatigue over long sessions
- Works equally well on CD, hi-res, DSD and low-bitrate streaming
